Drainage System Reconstruction on Salem Walk

October, 2007.

This project was started to remedy the storm water drainage problems in the southernmost section of Salem Walk.  This area has had more than its share of drainage issues after a rain, snow or ice storm.
True catch basins were never installed and the original 4-inch drain line never provided proper drainage.
The condominium board received professional input from Salem Walk resident Bob Fiore, who has experience in this area, and a hired engineering firm.  Based upon the recommendations new catch basins were installed in the area comprising buildings number 6 and 7.
A larger 12-inch diameter underground drain pipe was installed replacing the 4-inch drain line.  Three new significantly larger catch basins, commonly called "storm drains", replaced the single drain previously there. These new catch basins will improve drainage in that area. They are located in the grass area just past unit 49, on the sidewalk between units 51 and 41, and midway between units 37 and 55.
The photos below show  the installation stages, along with an upgrade of the second catch basin on the sidewalk for safety.

After carefully locating and marking gas lines, work begins.  The first catch basin is installed and attached to a new larger 12-inch diameter drain line which connects to a channel beyond the fence near New Haven Avenue.

The original undersized drain.

In this close-up view, we can see the catch basin, steel catch basin cover, and points of attachment to the 12-inch drain pipe.  The closest side of the concrete square will be opened to attach the drain pipe which continues away from the street towards the parking lot.

Bob Austin lowers the second catch basin into place as Dave guides him.

Looking southward towards New Haven Avenue, the first and second catch basins can be seen.

With the second catch basin having been installed, the line is continued to the location of the third catch basin.

Work is just about complete.  The ground has been filled in.  Grass seed has been planted.  Asphalt now surrounds the new middle catch basin.  Its location should mitigate much of the problem with standing water along the sidewalk.  The cover of this catch basin is designed to be walked on.
